The paint company is passing out of the Butler family hands after nearly 125 years. The store opened on June 25, 1876, the day of Custer's Last Stand, and may be the oldest paint store in the country. It has been located at 51 Colony Street since 1897. Jack Butler began working there to help his father and stayed for 43 years. After deciding to retire, Jack met Meriden resident Dave Zebarth and sold the shop to him recently. Jack was impressed with Dave's enthusiasm for Downtown Meriden. He wants to be part of the community-to be active and involved and bring some business back. He worked for seven years with Sherwin-Williams as a salesman and district manager. He hopes to build up the contractor base at Butler's, which accounts for about 15 per cent of the business. He was attracted by the opportunity to offer customers a quality product right in their own community through a small business, and the favorable location. The City of Meriden congratulates the Butler family on its long service to the community, and wishes the new owner the best.
