Butler Paint Company occupies a space on Colony Street only a short distance away from the original John F. Butler Company, founded by Jack Butler's grandfather 124 years ago. John Butler arrived in America from Ireland alone at age 9. He served in the Civil War and later found work in a paint store on West Main Street owned by Bella Carter. On June 25, 1876, he opened his own paint store at 34 Colony Street, the same day on which General Custer's cavalry was defeated by Sioux and Cheyenne Indians. In 1897, Mr. Butler moved to a larger building which he had constructed, at 51 Colony Street., the same space which his grandson Jack now occupies. Jack credits the success of the business, which is the oldest retail business in downtown Meriden, to perseverance, marketing, and changing with the times. It is also the oldest paint store continuously owned by the same family in the country. Old ledgers which Jack has preserved show the growth of Meriden into an important manufacturing center. When John Butler passed away, his wife Mary convinced her son William to leave Philadelphia to manage the Meriden store. Jack praises his father for saving the store from its financial problems. Store Manager Eileen Horton commends Jack for his dedication, because providing personal service to meet customers' changing needs is the reason for their continued success.
