October 11, 2000

U.S. Rep. James H. Maloney recently visited Casa Boricua to announce that the U.S. Department of Commerce had approved a grant of $438,000 to the Connecticut Association for United Spanish Action (CAUSA). The money will fund a computer network offering online courses in Spanish and English. It will also establish six computer centers around the state, connected to a ONE-Stop Career Center. All state and federal resources for adult education and job training now flow into these job centers. The so-called "Project Nexo" attempts to overcome cultural and language barriers facing low-income Hispanics. It will allow them to further their education and obtain job training, while exposing them to computer technology. Four out of 10 Hispanic households in Connecticut (with an estimated Hispanic population of 213,000), do not live above the federal poverty level, and Latinos account for one-third of the state's welfare caseload. Casa Boricua is one of the 12 member organizations of CAUSA. Each of the members will receive two to three computers connected to the network established by the grant. Magali Kupfer, executive director, said Casa will host one of the six computer centers, each of which will have 12 computers available. The state's two U.S. senators, Christopher Dodd and Joseph I. Lieberman, praised the initiative which will offer new economic opportunities to Hispanics and help many companies have greater diversity among their workforce.
