H1N1 Flu Vaccine Clinics Scheduled for Target Populations

October 12, 2009

The Meriden Health Department is scheduled to receive the first shipment of H1N1 influenza (swine flu) vaccine on Friday, October 9, 2009. Vaccination clinics will be held on Thursday, October 15 and Friday, October 16 from 9:00-4:00pm at the Health Department, 165 Miller Street. The vaccine will be offered at no cost to Meriden residents. Appointments for the vaccine can be made by calling the Clinic office at 630-4233.

In accordance with the state H1N1 vaccination distribution plan, the initial shipment vaccine will be given to healthy children between the ages of 2 and 4, who are at greater risk for severe illness if they contract the H1N1 virus. The first round of vaccine is also being made available to vaccinate caregivers and household contacts of children (less than 6 months old) who are 49 years of age or younger. Additional clinics will be scheduled as more vaccine is delivered throughout the fall. The current vaccine is a nasal spray and 2 doses (4 weeks apart) will be needed for children under the age of 10. The nasal spray has been approved for use in healthy persons 2 to 49 years of age, who are not pregnant. The H1N1 vaccine is only effective against the H1N1 virus and does not protect against seasonal influenza. Residents are encouraged to get their seasonal flu shot, as well as the H1N1 vaccination as it becomes available.

Information about H1N1 influenza and the vaccine can be obtained by calling the new public hotline operated by the Connecticut Department of Public Health at 1-800-830- 9426. Additional information can be found on the Meriden Health Department's website, www.meridenhealth.com.
