The Meriden Health Department has recently received funding to support cardiovascular disease policy initiatives. Through June 30, 2000, the Health Department will be gathering information on the local population about tobacco use, diabetes, exercise and nutrition. Many work sites in the area have wellness programs or guidelines and understand the need for policies which support the desire for positive behavior change, particularly as they apply to loss of productivity in the workplace. The Health Department is asking companies with wellness programs or those that see a need to enhance employee health to contact that agency for potential input on this grant. The benefit of this collaboration are two-fold: while increasing community awareness of the risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease, company participation also serves to increase employee morale, fitness and productivity.
