Learning for Fun at Women and Families Center

March 31, 2014

The STAR Before & After School Program students have enjoyed exploring the fields of Physics and Electricity during the past couple of months. We studied the effects of force and motion through experimenting with race cars, bouncy balls, and other items while manipulating factors such as the height of an inclined plane or surface. The children created atom models with mini-marshmallows and toothpicks, formed complete circuits to conduct electricity with certain types of food, such as potatoes, and built hydro-powered k'nex models to generate electricity enough to light up a small light bulb!

As a part of literacy development, students wrote their own variations of poetry, including acrostic, limerick (AABBA rhyming), and color poems. They look forward to completing their own compilation of poems and sharing them with their families at the end of the year!

Additionally, students enjoyed visiting the Children's Museum during February break. They learned about gravity in outer space and on other planets, explored generating electricity with manual energy on various lego machines, and visited exhibits of several types of insects, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals, even petting some! The children also learned about the rich history of the Pequot tribe at the Pequot Museum and had fun creating Pequot-style clay pottery. The STAR students look forward to taking field trips to the Beardsley Zoo and Connecticut Science Center during April vacation. Soon we will begin our unit on Astronomy!
