MidState Medical Center, Meriden, CT, has been selected as the winner of the 2006 Connecticut Nurses' Association (CNA) Excellence in the Workplace Award for its Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) process. The announcement was made by Linda Berger Spivack, RN, MSN, Vice President of Patient Care Services for MidState Medical Center. "We are very proud of being the recipient of this prestigious honor."

The goal of the Excellence in the Workplace Award is to "empower nurses in the workplace to create an environment which promotes professional autonomy and control over nursing practice." CNA evaluates the proposal based on the extend to which the project support/advances professional nursing practice in the workplace; evidence of creativity and innovation; the relationship of the project to today's challenges/opportunities facing nurses in the workplace; and the practicality and utility of the project.

According to MidState's Director of Cancer Care services and Nursing Director Abbi Bruce, RN, MS, AOCN, "The Continuous Quality Improvement process is at the basis of practice at MidState. It is woven into every area in the institution and is a common thread that determines decisions and practice changes. Monthly departmental CQI meetings allow opportunity for staff to evaluate present processes and look for ways to improve. The nursing council structure, including Clinical Practice Council, Professional Nursing Council, and Quality Management Council, all provide a structure for innovation, creativity, and change for nurses at all levels. There is ongoing support and encouragement for this to occur. It is not just a concept, it is, in fact, a part of the culture.

Daily Health Care Team rounds are an example in excellence in patient care. Each day, rounds are made on every patient on the unit and include the nurse, physician, social worker, resource manager APRN, nutritionist, pharmacist, and nurse manager so that care is facilitated in a coordinated and individualized way. All members of the team, including the patient and family are aware of the plan and provide input. This provides a more optimal transition for the patient and family throughout their hospital stay."

Spivack concluded, "I am very proud of our team and delighted that MidState has been selected. The accomplishments of MidState's CQI program, the achievements of our nursing staff over the past years and with great nursing leadership committed to enhance professional nursing practice, MidState will continue to demonstrate excellence in the workplace well into the future."
