How You Can LIVE UNITED this Holiday Season!

October 5, 2011

A variety of volunteer opportunities are available throughout the holiday season and participants can serve at any level from donating a warm coat to collecting food donations at your workplace and neighborhood or by "adopting" a local family.

We need people like you to coordinate donations of food, toys, household items, gift baskets, food and gas gift cards, and warm clothing; these donations are great ways to invest in your community and they are always distributed to deserving families among us. With your steadfast support of our Holiday Programs, together we will assist families among us to share in the goodness of the holiday season. Every single effort to help strengthen families in our neighborhood makes a difference to enrich the condition for all of us.

Our Adopt-a-Family Program is a way to work with your family, friends, group, or company to sponsor a local family and purchase much-needed items off their wish list for the holidays. You can be assured that your gifts will put a smile on the faces of a family that is truly in need during this holiday season. The families are screened through the social workers at local agencies in Meriden and Wallingford that we work in conjunction with, and we help coordinate donors (you!) with families who need help. The Giving Tree at the Westfield Meriden Mall is another option. Agencies work with families in need to place a wish list item on a tag. Shoppers are encouraged to select a tag from the tree, purchase the gift item on the tag, and drop the gift off with mall staff. This is a great and fast option for those who want to help but feel like they don't have the extra time during the busy holiday season. The Giving Tree program is run in partnership with the Westfield Meriden Mall and trees with tags will be displayed there during the entire holiday season!

You can also help families in Meriden and Wallingford by purchasing supplies to make a delicious holiday meal for a family. Holiday Food baskets are usually made up of traditional non-perishable holiday food items, such as ham, canned vegetables, sweet potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, canned pie filling, and gravy. A grocery store gift card can also be included to help the family purchase perishable items like a turkey and fresh vegetables.

Run a Drive! You can coordinate any type of collection like a winter clothing drive to help local families stay cozy and warm during the cold winter season, or a general food drive to replenish local food pantries. The choice is yours, but the need for these items is endless!

I know that this may seem early but remember that Thanksgiving is only 7 weeks away from today! If you are interested in participating or have any questions, please don't hesitate to call me: Wanda I. Guzman, Coordinator, The Volunteer Center, United Way of Meriden and Wallingford: Tel: (203) 235-4403, ext. 12.
