The mall recently hosted an information and sign-up session for the South Central Connecticut Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association. Its Safe Return program has recovered 5,000 wandering victims of the disease since 1993. Safe Return is a nonprofit registration program with a national database and a 24-hour, toll-free hotline designed specifically to find Alzheimer's patients or others with similar dementia. Mary Underwood, program director for the Chapter, and director of Arden Courts Alzheimer's Assisted Living in Hamden, has announced that April is Safe Return awareness month. There is scholarship money available for those who can't afford the registration fee. Information and photographs are entered into the database, and patients are given a choice of identification that can be worn as a bracelet or carried. Caregivers can get ID bracelets for an additional $5. Police departments are trained on how the program works.
