April 11, 2001

Marcia Trotta, Executive Director, believes in outreach to the community, especially to children. Every new mother and her baby get a packet containing a children's book and an invitation to a children's library card before they go home from MidState Medical Center. Last year's total was 1,103. She wants to see those children using one of the innovative satellite libraries opened in Meriden at three public elementary schools and the Boys and Girls Club. In recognition of the satellites and her quarter-century career of leadership in many other child-oriented projects, Marcia is receiving this year's Faith Hektoen Award from the Connecticut Library Association's children' section. The award, named for Connecticut's first state consultant for children' s services, may be made on the basis of particular projects or career achievement. Virginia Matthews, who nominated Marcia for the award, maintains that Marcia believes that children and youth are the foundation of our future. Marcia decided to create a presence in various neighborhoods without asking the city for a lot of money, so she chose the schools. Virginia Alwang, vice president of the library board, describes Marcia as quiet and low key, but highly energetic and driven to set and achieve difficult goals. She is also very forward looking and well known throughout the country.
