A Reader's Feast

January 15, 2008

Our taste in food - what we eat (and avoid); how we grow, select, prepare and serve it; with whom we eat and under what circumstances - is culturally mediated in ways powerful but often unobtrusive. If we are what we eat, we are also what we read. The books in this series nourish the mind, the senses, and the sensibilities. Participants will be invited to supplement the readings with cookbooks and recipes whose significance in their lives and culture they will be asked to define, to interpret, and to question. Discussion Leader is Christopher Brown, Teacher. The series of free programs will be held at Meriden Public Library, 105 Miller Street, Meriden, CT 06450 on Wednesdays from 6:30-8 p.m. as follows: February 6, 2008, The Natural History of the Senses, Diane Ackerman, Touch, Taste, and Vision; February 20, 2008, The Art of Eating, M. F. K. Fisher, The Gastronomical Me and Alphabet for Gourmets; March 5, 2008, Mistress of Spices, Chitra B. Divakaruni; March 19, 2008, Chocolat, Joanne Harris. To reserve a seat in the discussions, call (203) 630-6349, sign up online at www.meridenlibrary.org, or email comsvc@hotmail.com. Multiple copies of the books are available at the library.
