The agency recently received a federal grant for job readiness programs targeting low-income housing residents in the city, announced James Rice, chief executive officer. The three-year, $150,000 grant is part of the Resident Opportunity and Self-Sufficiency program, which seeks to make welfare recipients self-sufficient. The MHA will co-ordinate with the Women and Families Center to provide case workers, counseling and support services. On-site literacy and language classes by the Literacy Volunteers of Greater New Haven are also part of the programs. Mayor Joseph Marinan praised the program because it will result in residents finding jobs and leaving public housing.
