Pokémon Go and Community Health Centers

If you have kids who have suddenly changed from spending their free time staring at their cellphones to walking around their neighborhood, don't worry, this just might be a good thing. They just might be playing Pokemon Go. Those of you with older kids may remember Pokemon. It started as a video game back in 1996. Over the years, it has continued to evolve, and now you can play Pokemon on your cellphone as you walk around your neighborhood.Anything that gets your kids out walking around their neighborhoods, as long as they do it safely, is probably a good thing. A lot of the safety issues are the basic safety issues that apply no matter what your motivation. Make sure your kids remain aware of what is going on around them. It is also a good idea for them to travel with their friends, both for the sake of safety, as well as for the sake of community.
Learning about what your kids find interesting is also a good idea. So here are a few basics: One of the key goals is to capture Pokemon. To do this, you need to gather some Poke balls. You can get these by visiting PokeStops. PokeStops are locations in the neighborhood. One PokeStop is our health center in New Britain. When you visit a Pokestop, you can spin it and gather Poke Balls. Then, when you see a Pokemon, you throw your Poke Balls at them to capture them. You can also install Lure Modules onto PokeStops to lure more Pokemons to the PokeStop. There's a lot more to Pokemon Go, but hopefully, this will help some of you better understand what your kids are up to.
We're not here to promote a specific game or company, but we do find it pretty exciting that Pokemon has come up with a way to get more people excited about getting outside and getting more exercise. Over the coming days, we'll be keeping our eyes open on Pokemon and talking with friends about how we can use it to help more people get more exercise.
