Mother and Daughter Evenings Out

August 5, 2009

This free program is designed to help mothers and their middle school daughters develop positive bonds and enhance communication during critical time of adolescence. Research on mother-daughter relationship suggests that quality relationships are linked to a wide range of outcomes, including emotional well-being, social competence, low levels of psychological distress, and a smooth transition to adulthood by reducing problem behaviors of sexual activity and substance use.

The dynamic of a mother-daughter relationship changes constantly when each woman enters a different stage in her life. Adolescence is a difficult stage for girls to go through and sometimes the terrible teens can dim the glow of the most confident moms. Girls who feel good about themselves are more likely to make healthy life choices than those with low self-worth. Rushford recognizes that to be effective, interventions must engage family members on both the cognitive and emotional levels. Adolescent girls face many challenges; statistics reflect the importance of reaching girls at an early age to combat the negative influences of society on the development of positive, affirming social and life skills.

The goal of the program is to help mothers and daughters develop positive bonds and enhance communication during the critical time of adolescence. In doing so, the communication skills will lead the girls to make healthy life choices because they will be more likely to discuss issues/concerns with their mothers.

The program is held in the community one evening a month from 6p.m-8p.m. Each two-hour session includes dinner for participants and centers around issues that are relevant to adolescent girls and their mothers such as healthy body image, alcohol abuse and healthy life choices. Some activities have included: Yoga, Meditation and Bellydancing, Makeovers, Social Pressures, Nutrition and Healthy Eating, Gingerbread House Design.

The 2009-2010 sessions will kick off in October and be held every other month until May 2010. For more information please contact our prevention department at (203) 630-5357.
