Cheshire Library Creates Teen Reading Room With Help From Naugatuck Savings Bank Foundation

April 15, 2013

Cheshire Library Creates Teen Reading Room With Help From Naugatuck Savings Bank Foundation Naugatuck, CT, April 4, 2013 The Naugatuck Savings Bank Foundation awarded a $5,000 grant to the Cheshire Public library to support its Teen Reading Room project. The project was a 2012 initiative to expand the library's current services to teens ages 12-17 years of age.

"We are happy to support this project which provides a positive environment for teens to learn and blends traditional library resources with access to modern technology," said Charles J. Boulier III, President and CEO, Naugatuck Savings Bank. The new Cheshire Public Library Teen Room is separated from the Children's Room with a glass partition wall, the lowest few feet of which is comprised of shelving. The room is equipped with three iMac computers with internet access, individual and group study spaces, and a wide variety of age-appropriate books and materials for browsing or checkout by teens.

The group study area has reconfigurable tables and stackable chairs so that the ever-changing needs of teen library users can be accommodated. Funds from the town, state grants and gifts have also supported the project. "With their own large, more age-appropriate space, Cheshire's teens can feel more at home in the library," said Ramona Burkey, Cheshire Public Library Director. "We expect to serve at least 7,000 teens each year and increase borrowing by teens by at least 5%. We are grateful for Naugatuck Savings Bank Foundation's support and enthusiasm for this project.
