October 2011 Community Support Award Presented to MidState Medical Center of Meriden

October 4, 2011

The Meriden Board of Education recently started a new award given out at Board of Education meetings to recognize our community partners. The Community Support Award strives to recognize those business partners, organizations, and individuals that have demonstrated outstanding support for our schools.

The October 2011 recipient of the Community Support Award is MidState Medical Center of Meriden. MidState was recognized at the October 4, 2011 Board of Education meeting. Present to accept the award for MidState was Diamond Belejack, Manager of Volunteer Services and Coordinator of School-Business Partnerships; and MaryAnn Volkringer, Vice President of Business Development.

MidState has generously supported The Meriden Public Schools in many ways. John Barry School has a longstanding school-business partnership with MidState of over 10 years. They have adopted classrooms. Barry School sends walking field trips there every year. They have offered curricular support through health fairs for students and read-aloud days. MidState staff judges the annual build-a- book contest, and they give monetary scholarship awards know as "Beacon Awards" to students at the end of the year awards assembly. The Beacon Awards go to children who exemplify the vision and mission of both MidState and John Barry. They have invited many students, from across the district over the years, to demonstrations of the latest technologies in the medical field to MidState.

MidState Medical Center is just one of the many community partners the school district collaborates with regularly. The Meriden Board of Education looks forward to recognizing other community partners in the coming months.
