Meriden's Senior Buddy Reader Program to Receive Award

Meriden's Senior Buddy Reader Program to Receive 2010 Distinguished Friend of Education Award from the CT Association of Schools on Tuesday, May 4 at 6:30 p.m. at Board of Education, 22 Liberty St, 3rd Floor, Meriden, CT 06450.

The award is given annually to an organization that makes strong contributions to public education. In the nomination, made by staff at Nathan Hale Elementary, it was noted that the program "sends a very powerful message to students as it communicates the value of reading, promotes personal motivation and generates tolerance and mutual respect for other."

Senior Buddy Readers is an intergenerational literacy and mentoring program connecting more than 75 area seniors with 200 first- and second-graders in five Meriden elementary schools. Seniors volunteer an hour a week to help young children become better readers. Buddy Readers is sponsored by Meriden Children First in partnership with the Meriden Board of Education.
