L*I*O*N, Leaders In Our Neighborhood, is a parent advocacy group supported by Meriden Children First Initiative. In December of 2002, we began a reading & mentoring program for 1st and 2nd graders called "Buddy Readers".Senior citizens from throughout the community work with children who have been determined to be in need of mentoring and help with their reading fluency. This only takes one hour a week of their time and has proven to be a rewarding experience for both the seniors and the students.
We are now looking toward the 2003-2004 school year. We would like to expand the Buddy Readers program to Nathan Hale Elementary School on Tuesday mornings from 9:30-10:30 and Casmir Pulaski Elementary School on Wednesday mornings from 9:30-10:30.
