MidState Medical Center, Meriden, Connecticut was awarded the 2003 Connecticut Breakthrough Quality Award by the Connecticut Quality Improvement Award Partnership, Inc. (CQIA) at the 16th annual conference on October 16, 2003. MidState Medical Center is the first hospital to receive this honor since the award’s creation.
MidState President and Chief Executive Officer Lucille Janatka accepted the award on behalf of the Hospital. Ms. Janatka stated that, “MidState is pleased to receive this recognition as it validates the commitment and dedication of our entire staff, volunteers and Board of Directors.”
“The Breakthrough Award is one more step in a journey to provide long term institutional success through a customer-focused organizational culture.” This has been accomplished by years of commitment to continuous quality improvement. Janatka cited MidState’s vision of providing superior services that meet or exceed customers’ expectations, as the catalyst for advancement. She said that “MidState Medical Center’s core values are defined as ‘respect, caring, and teamwork’ and are reflected in the daily interactions of our employees with every customer, both internal and external.”
MidState’s success has also been due to a strong infrastructure that focuses on hiring, orienting, reorienting, and recognizing staff at every level of the organization. The CQIA examiners acknowledged MidState’s leadership and attention to four key business drivers: customer service, quality, profitability, and a skilled workforce. According to Ms. Janatka, “These business drivers have led to solid financial performance and excellent clinical quality.”
MidState has seen consistent growth in patient satisfaction, marked by increased favorable responses to the satisfaction survey question “likelihood of recommending hospital to others.” Over the last few years, the Hospital has consistently ranked in the top ten percent or better of over 1,000 hospitals in the nation for its customer satisfaction.
The CQIA Breakthrough to Quality Award recognizes Connecticut organizations for their “quality improvement measurements and business-impact initiatives.” The Connecticut Quality Improvement Award, Inc., America’s first state-level quality award organization, was founded in 1987 utilizing the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award for Performance Excellence criteria in an effort to advance innovative programs that improve quality, performance, and marketplace competitiveness. Since 1987, CQIA has recognized Connecticut manufacturing and service companies that excel in managing quality improvement for business success and growth.
MidState Medical Center is an acute care, not-for-profit, community hospital, licensed for 130 beds. Located in Meriden, MidState is the result of the merger of two community hospitals (WWII Veterans’ Memorial Hospital and Meriden-Wallingford Hospital) in 1991. MidState moved into its new facility in September 1998 and recently completed a 47,800 square foot expansion project that added 28 inpatient beds, two additional operating suites and recover bays, wound and hyperbaric care, and a dedicated digestive health center with additional physician office space and parking.
