November 19, 2001

The response to the bi-lingual computer classes being offered has been heartening to the administrators of Project NEXO. Latinos are the fastest growing minority in the United States and in the state. Casa's Director Magali Kupfer also serves as President of the Connecticut Association for United Spanish Action Inc, the state's largest coalition of Latino community-based organizations. Project NEXO's funding comes from a U.S. Department of Commerce grant of $ 438,000, and requires its directors to document the outcome for the low-income working class clients and recent immigrants the project serves. The number of Latinos has grown 51 percent since 1990 and number 12,296, or 21 percent of Meriden's population and make up about a third of the city's school children, according to the 2000 Census. Project NEXO provides free access to GED and English as a second language curriculum and online college courses offered through the Connecticut Distance Learning Consortium. The project is a partner with several education and employment resources, such as the Connecticut Department of Labor, the state's vocational schools and Charter Oak State College.
