E- Briefs for Economic Development

Recently the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) approved a $1 million grant to support the development of Meriden's Transit Oriented Development District (TODD). Funds will be used to acquire properties and create a TODD Zoning plan. The TODD calls for the creation of mixed income housing and commercial development linked to the City's new intermodal transportation center. The center will serve the planned New Haven to Springfield commuter rail service. CT DECD applied for the grant on Meriden and New Haven's behalf. The City of New Haven will also receive $1 million.

In October the City received approval from HUD for a $1.5 million Section 108 loan. These funds will be used to demolish the abandoned structures on the Factory H site. The loan will be repaid from the City's future stream of CDBG grants. The US Environmental Protection Agency has invested $2.5 million for testing and clean up. Reuse plans include mixed-use development for the Factory H site and for 116 Cook Avenue, an adjacent 70,000 sq ft vacant medical office building purchased by the City in 2009.

Meriden's MidState Medical Center Expands�Again! The hospital has completed a $45 million expansion, nearly doubling the capacity of emergency services. Emergency services are now operating in 33,000 square feet of space at the hospital's south end and have increased the emergency department from 28 to 53 beds.The emergency department has been adding staff, about 12 positions in nursing and support. The department has also been working to set up electronic medical records, which should be fully operational by early December.

A 200-by-88-foot portable rink will soon offer ice-skating fun at the City's Hub property. Mayor Michael S. Rohde said the plan to bring the rink to the Hub had been in the works for a few months, and officials are hoping it helps encourage activity at the downtown property over the winter. Over the summer, the Hub hosted the Cole Bros. Circus of the Stars and the Sgt. Jeffrey A. Boucher Auto Show. The rink is likely to be placed on the north end of the 14.4-acre parcel and would be removed in March as temperatures begin to warm.

Washington Trust provides $5.2 million refinancing for Meriden Retail's Silver Commons Shopping Center - This Shopping Center is located along South Broad St. on Rte. 5. The property consists of a multi-tenanted retail building and a free-standing bank branch totaling 26,260 s/f. The center is leased to a variety of regional and national tenants including Starbucks, Cold Stone Creamery, AT&T, Aspen Dental, Hair Cuttery, Fed Ex/Kinko's, Liberty Travel, and Pizza Hut.
