Open DOHR Graduates Recognized for their Successes

November 30, 2009

Eight Open DOHR participants graduated from the Middlesex Community College Certified Nurse Aide program on October 29, 2009. Each of these students participated in an intensive 6 week CNA course as well as a 25 hour employment skills course through the Women and Families Center. Participants learned strategies to use in writing effective resumes and cover letters, practiced interview skills, and developed soft skills such as conflict management for employment success. The students also participated in an "Integrating Career Awareness" (ICA) pilot program made possible by a grant from the Nellie Mae Education Foundation. The ICA curriculum encouraged students to set goals, explore career tracks and make educational plans for themselves. These students really showed that they are willing to put in the hard work it takes to achieve success! There were several other highlights from this graduating class: five students graduated with perfect attendance; five students passed the final examination with a 90% score or higher; and each of them juggled multiple responsibilities and challenges in order to accomplish their goals! We are very proud of their efforts.

This night also marked the presentation of the Damaris Molina-Torres annual award. Shanelle Dowd was honored with this award for exemplifying patience, thoughtfulness, humility and compassion throughout her participation in the Open DOHR program. It was an emotional night as Damaris' family attended the graduation ceremony. Michael Buccilli, Associate Director of Employment and Training at WFC presented the award to Miss Dowd.
