Administrators of Horace C. Wilcox Technical High ...

April 4, 2000

Administrators of Horace C. Wilcox Technical High School expect to receive $8.5 million from the governor's state-wide school construction grant, an initiative to rehabilitate and upgrade vocational schools across the state. Dominic Spera, superintendent of technical schools noted that Wilcox was the first school in the history of the school district to get this funding. Prior to this grant, technical schools had to get money from the State Bond Commission for physical improvements. Some projects had to wait years for funding. Spera also indicated that he was pleased that the school would be treated like all public schools and that access to funding would be equal to any other school district in the state. Included in future plans are the expansion and renovating of another 16,000 square feet in order to relocate and expand existing programs. Approximately 15,000 square feet of new space will house the culinary arts department, a new gymnasium and additional classrooms. State Senator Thomas Gaffey, co-chairman of the Education Committee, has said that the selection of Wilcox was a breakthrough and will lead the way for other vocational-technical schools.
