Meriden Company highlighted in Discover Magazine

December 19, 2007

Discover Magazine recognized Protein Sciences' technology for manufacturing insect cell-based flu shots, in its January 2008 issue, among 99 other breakthrough stories. Discover cited as No. 12, last spring's Food and Drug Administration approval for a two-shot vaccine to combat avian flu, and the government's commitment to stockpile enough doses to protect 20 million people. It further mentions Protein Sciences' method of making a common flu vaccine that is not only effective, but can be made faster. The company's headquarters and manufacturing facility is on Research Parkway in Meriden. According to its Web site, Discover Magazine has nearly 6 million paid subscribers and sells about 100,000 newsstand copies monthly. Researchers at Protein Sciences and John Treanor, a professor of medicine at the University of Rochester, were mentioned in the magazine for infecting caterpillar cells with an insect virus engineered to produce flu virus protein from three ordinary flu strains. Protein Sciences's Flu Blok is in two final trials involving 5,200 people. Adams expects to file a license application in March, followed by a six-month review before the company can begin manufacturing the vaccine. It is also putting together an investment package and is discussing tax incentives with the city to make the vaccine here. (Excerpt from Record-Journal, 12/19/2007)
