Board of Trustees and Chancellor Appoint Dr. Wilfredo Nieves as Interim President of NVCC

October 16, 2007

On Monday, October 15, 2007, the Board of Trustees for the Connecticut Community College System and System Chancellor Marc S. Herzog acted to appoint Dr. Wilfredo Nieves, President of Middlesex Community College, Middletown, Connecticut, to serve as the Interim President of Naugatuck Valley Community College, Waterbury, Connecticut.

Dr. Nieves will serve in the interim position while the Board of Trustees conducts a national search for a successor to Dr. Richard Sanders who retired recently as president of Naugatuck Valley after 24 years in that position. Dr. Nieves will assume his duties at Naugatuck Valley starting on October 17 and will be assisted with day-to-day operations of the college by Executive Dean Patricia Bouffard and the college's management team. Dr. Nieves will also continue to serve as the President of Middlesex during the interim with the assistance of the Dean of Administration at Middlesex, David Sykes, acting as Executive Dean for the college in charge of day-to-day operations. The Board of Trustees has authorized the start of the search process and Board Chair Louise S. Berry has appointed the search committee to be chaired by Dr. Murali Atluru along with Trustees Hugh Cox and Carol Wallace and the Chancellor to serve as members of the committee. The search process is expected to take approximately six to eight months, during which time Dr. Nieves will serve in a dual presidency, returning to Middlesex as President upon the successful completion of the Naugatuck Valley search and the appointment of a successor to Dr. Sanders.

In announcing the interim appointment of Dr. Nieves to the NVCC presidency, Mrs. Berry, Chair of the Board of Trustees, expressed the gratitude of the Board to Dr. Nieves for accepting the Board's request to assume the interim appointment at Naugatuck Valley while continuing his leadership of Middlesex Community College. "Dr. Nieves is a well known and respected educational leader who will bring energy and enthusiasm and an effective and supportive leadership style to his role at Naugatuck Valley. With the able support of two accomplished executive deans and the management teams of both campuses, I am confident progress will continue on the strategic priorities of each college. We will be able to conduct a successful search for the next president of Naugatuck Valley and ensure a smooth transition that will ensure that both Middlesex and Naugatuck Valley continue to meet the needs of the students and regions they serve."

Chancellor Marc S. Herzog also expressed his appreciation for Dr. Nieves' willingness to devote his time and leadership abilities to guide the critical projects underway at both campuses including the completion of a major campus expansion at Naugatuck Valley, its Technology Center which is due for completion in Fall 2008, and encouraging the expansion of the academic programs and services offered by Middlesex into new areas in international education, community and business services.
