The YMCA's Arts Center Committee has visions of artists toiling in lofts, theater premiers and symphony concerts---all of which would transform downtown Meriden into the cultural mecca of Connecticut. Nationwide, YMCA's have begun to embrace arts and humanities. Some are holding poetry readings and some are showing children how to weave and dye fabric. Meriden wants to join in and arts center supporters say that downtown is ready for development because the area is also the hub of many artistic businesses and organizations such as the Castle Craig Players, Sandman Gallery Frame Shoppe and Gallery 53, just to name a few. Centerbrook Architects and Planners, Inc. has offered to assess the soundness of the arts center idea, possible locations and set up workshops to develop plans. Boutiques and restaurants would fill a void left untouched by shopping malls.
