Anita Givens, director of the Minority Achievers ...

October 25, 1999

Anita Givens, director of the Minority Achievers program, hopes to encourage minority teens to set educational and career goals, to expose them to the world of work and career opportunities, to give some recognition to minority professionals and business people, and to increase the diversity of the Meriden workforce. In additional to being educational, the program can establish networks between employers and up-and-coming students. It is the first program of its kind locally, and is patterned after Black Achievers programs in Harlem and Boston. Ms. Givens has recruited minority professionals and business people from the area, including lawyers, police officers, teachers, artists, and a school principal. They will volunteer in a hands-on program for minority students in grades six through twelve. Ana Serrano, who will oversee the program's teen advisory council, is studying early childhood education at CCSU and is one of several City SERVE! AmeriCorps members working in the program. In turn, some of the student participants in the program are expected to act as tutors and mentors to students at Ben Franklin School. Student members can register for the course by contacting Ms. Givens t (203) 235-6386. The cost for enrolling is $10.00 plus a possible membership at the YMCA.
