On Sunday evening, November 19th, the mall was crowded with shoppers contributing to their annual fund-raiser, "Westfield Works Wonders", sponsored by the United Way of Meriden and Wallingford, the United Way of Southington, the Record-Journal and Westfield. The cost was $ 5.00 to shop until 10:30 p.m. Since 1997, the event has raised $825,000.00 for schools, hospitals, and other organizations. Jim Snow, general manager of the Meriden mall, stated that this years' goal was $ 1 million for the four Westfield malls in Connecticut. The United Way co-ordinated the 15 gift trees in the mall, which request unwrapped gifts for needy children by December 21st, and will deliver the gifts. Meriden Mayor Joe Marinan enthusiastically praised the project. Shoppers were rewarded with discounts, free offers and food, Santa Claus, glittering decorations and music provided by deejays and local bands.
