August 20, 2001

The Ronald McDonald summer reading program entertained 100 children with juggling sticks resembling french fries and pillows shaped like baked apple pies. They received gifts including purple combs and bookmarks and certificates offering free french fries. Rebecca Kuchar, McDonald's spokeswoman, maintained that the company is committed to supporting educational programs. It is an educational initiative teaching children about the library and encouraging them to read in a unique and fun way. The library welcomes any program that promotes literacy. The only condition is that the program focuses on literacy, commented Victoria Navin, the library's program coordinator. Sherry Michalke from the library's youth services department explained that the clown's visit was won through a grant from the Southern Connecticut Library Council.
