November 3, 2000

The Library's Rotary Satellite branch opened on October 30th, featuring a mini-library with books for children, green rocking chairs, colorful posters and fancy bookmarks. Branch chief Alexis Burgess said the room was decorated to catch children's eyes. The Rotary Club of Meriden, the city and the Board of Education paid for the branch. Cesar Gonzales, the Boys and Girls Club educational director, said many children already have their library cards. He maintains that the club is now ten times stronger in being able to help the children. President Gary Burt said the new library within the club's walls is one of the first in the country and is a tremendous opportunity for children and for their neighborhood. Meriden Public Library Director Marcia Trotta believes the location of the library offers an opportunity to emphasize the "whole child". Adult residents are also invited to use the satellite location. During the day, the satellite will host storytelling programs for preschool, Head Start and school readiness students. Rotary Club members will volunteer time reading to children in the library, along with the Tri-Town Golden Kiwanis.
