The 112 year-old former Boys Club has been renamed ...

October 19, 2000

The 112 year-old former Boys Club has been renamed and admitted its first girl members during the second week in September. The decision was made because in past years, an increasing number of girls have been participating in activities, especially varsity sports. The recently renovated building now offers some activities specifically intended for girls, including basketball, Double Dutch and the Smart Girls responsibility class. Althea White, the girls program director, maintains that after-school activities for girls, especially those which improved self-esteem, were not as numerous as those for boys. Program Director Don Maleto is arranging a basketball team for high school girls. The young girls who recently registered at the Club have been participating in activities during the summer and are thrilled at the expanded programs for them, as well as the opportunity to keep them productively occupied. The Club is looking for women coaches for the high school girls' basketball team. For information, call Mr. Maleto at (203) 235-8185. The deadline for applications is September 23, 2000.
