The Boys and Girls Club of Meriden has hired two new full-time employees in preparation for the opening of its new building this spring. Cesar Gonzales is a part-time club employee and former Maloney High School paraprofessional and coach for boys' track and swimming. He will work on the Power Hour tutoring, mentoring and educational programs. Althea White, a former elementary school gym teacher, will focus on athletics and designing girls' programs that the club has been waiting to add until the completion of the expansion. Although new programs have yet to be decided, some of Ms. White's suggestions include double Dutch tournaments, dance lessons and cooking classes. Ms. White hopes that her female perspective will "make sure it's not all sports-oriented." She holds a bachelor's degree in physical education from Montclair State University in New Jersey and she is finishing her last class towards the completion of her master's degree through North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. A Meriden native, Mr. Gonzales has worked for the Saturday night teen center program for the past 2-1/2 years; he occasionally dropped by the club on weekday afternoons. The 1991 Maloney graduate has a bachelor's degree in special education from Southern Connecticut State University. Mr. Gonzales said that, before swimming started, he would just volunteer and help the kids with their homework. Now he said that he's looking forward to the challenge of starting something from the ground up. Gary Burt, the club's executive director, said that they are two top people with top backgrounds.
