October 20, 2003

At the annual meeting of the Connecticut Association of Not-for-Profit Providers for the Aging (CANPFA) held recently at Aqua Turf in Plantsville, Masonicare of Wallingford received three Best Practice Awards, presented to member organizations for excellence in the following five areas: Quality of Life; Clinical Innovations; Program Innovations; Creative Ancillary and/or Community Outreach Programs; Recruiting / Retention Innovations.

Masonicare was chosen to receive awards in three of the five categories. In the Quality of Life category, Masonic Healthcare Center was recognized for its Admissions/Nursing Welcoming Program, developed to help make a new resident feel at home and alleviate some of the anxiety associated with the admission process. The Center was also recognized in the Clinical Innovations Category for its Mandatory Annual Competency Validation Program, a program designed to provide an organized, time- and cost-effective way to annually evaluate the clinical staff's competency in a variety of hands-on skills. The third award, in the Community Outreach area, was for Masonicare's Sage Voices Column, developed in partnership with the Meriden Record-Journal. The monthly column features a resident of the Masonicare continuum and was designed to project a positive image of older adults by fostering intergenerational appreciation and communication.

CANPFA, founded in 1961, represents and promotes the interests of not-for-profit long-term care providers in Connecticut. Today, there are approximately 140 members who care for over 15,000 elderly at their facilities and in the community. CANPFA is dedicated to advocating for healthy, affordable and ethical services and care for older adults and chronically ill individuals.

Wallingford-based Masonicare is the state's leading provider of senior-focused healthcare services and retirement living communities. In addition to the Masonic Healthcare Center, Masonicare's affiliates include Connecticut VNA and Connecticut VNA, SE, Ashlar Village, Ashlar of Newtown, Masonic Management Services, and the Masonic Charity Foundation of Connecticut.
