On September 19, 1999, Girls Incorporated celebrated 80 years of inspiring girls to be strong, smart and bold Michelle Hamlin, a UCONN student who received the National Scholarship for Leadership from the club, believes it offers girls a support system not always existing within their families .Another club member, Kristina Kosnoff, believes that her training there inspired her to become a mentor in the junior leadership program. This program enables younger teens to talk to older girls about their lives, including drugs and peer pressure. Maureen Bilger, who will retire next year after 19 years as Executive Director, maintains that strong leadership roles encourage girls to develop those qualities in themselves.
