The Franciscan Life Center held its 15th Annual St. Francis Awards Sports Banquet at the Aqua Turf Club on June 6th. Maloney High School football coach Rob Szymaszek was one of the honorees for his community service. Two special guests were UCONN basketball coach Jim Calhoun and his wife Pat, who are long-time supporters of the Center. Other guests included Major League baseball commissioner Bowie Kuhn, former Boston Red Sox manager Joe Morgan and former Sox pitcher Gary Waslewski of Southington. Mother Shaun Vergauwen praised the honorees, the first local recipients of the awards, for their dedication to Christian values.
