Castle Bank, the Greater Meriden Chamber of Commer ...

October 20, 1999

Castle Bank, the Greater Meriden Chamber of Commerce and MEDCO, have formed the Small Business Initiative, a program offering assistance to owners of small- and medium-sized businesses. These services include loans from Castle Bank and advice from organizations such as the Service Corps of Retired Executives. The initiative would also be an information source for government and private programs available to businesses. Attorney Kenneth Mango, president of MEDCO, stated that there was a need to reach out to small businesses who don't have time to grow or expand their businesses or make them more productive. The Meriden Business & Learning Center, operated by MEDCO, is working with the Chamber of Commerce on development of a plan to assist businesses. The center will arrange educational programs for business owners. Organizers hope the program will be the impetus for establishment of a SCORE branch office in Meriden. Lawrence McGoldrick, president of Castle Bank, stressed that small- and middle-sized businesses, which make up the core of the city's economic community, must flourish to improve the vitality of the community. James Watson, a spokesman for the Department of Economic and Community development, said that the state has targeted Meriden as a reinvestment community.
