Chamber Board Boldly Recommends Name Change and Membership Votes YES!

Chamber Board Boldly Recommends Name Change and Membership Votes YES to Midstate Chamber of Commerce, Inc.

At the regular Board of Directors meeting on Wednesday, January 8, 2014 the Board of Directors of the Greater Meriden Chamber of Commerce unanimously voted to change the organization’s name to Midstate Chamber of Commerce, Inc.  This change reflects the reality that the best stuff is in the middle of our state.
This recommendation was brought to the full membership for a vote at a Special Meeting on January 17, 2014 and our members voted OVERWHELMINGLY (greater than 92% of the votes cast) in favor of the change.  Click here to see the Press Release making the announcement!

Our members have asked some questions about what this name change really means for them...and here are the answers:

  • This name change was a membership driven request that was brought through our committee process which included our Membership and Ambasssadors Committee, our Marketing and Publicity Committee and our Board of Directors.  All of these committees are open to all members of the chamber and meeting notices for all of our meetings are posted in our monthly Chamber Newsletter and on our website as well.
  • We will NOT be using a capital "S" like MidState Medical Center uses.  We will become the Midstate Chamber of Commerce, Inc.  There are more than 70 active businesses registered with the CT Secretary of State's Office currently using MIDSTATE in their name.  In fact, it is one of the more popular names in use today.  We will not be concerned about looking like the hospital until Hunter's Ambulance starts making regular deliveries to the Chamber.
  • The Chamber office will remain in Meriden.  We are not abandoning Meriden.
  • Virtually and physically all of our existing members do a lot of their business well beyond the two zip codes of Meriden. This name change better positions all of our members in central Connecticut to develop the markets that they currently work in or wish to expand to.
  • It would have been technically quicker and easier to file a change of DBA and be done...but your Board wanted to do it the right way and amend the Articles of Incorporation and ask the membership to weigh in on the change.  Your Board values your opinion and vote.
  • It has taken more than a year to do the due diligence to get from the discussion phase to the decision phase of this significant change.  To be clear, this Board recommended name change was NOT done as a response to the recent rash of decisions made by other chambers.
  • In the 30 days after the vote, our Marketing Committee reviewed nearly 2 dozen new logo samples.  The committee narrowed their selection down to four logos which were presented to the Board of Directors at the February 12, 2014 regular meeting for their final vote.  The "M with the Castle" will remain as it now represents the "M" in Midstate and the unique prespective from Castle Craig affords a beautiful and panaromic view of Meriden, Berlin, Wallingford and all of central Connecticut.
  • We respect the opinions of and want to continue to hear from our members.  Please feel free to call, email or stop in at any time if you have qustions about this change or any business of Midstate Chamber of Commerce.
