The Scrabble Challenge is a fun, social game that offers friendly competition and a chance to put literacy skills to good use. Teams will consist of four players at each table at a cost of $25 per person, or $100 per table. There will be an opportunity for teams to buy Scrabble tiles at their face value. A light supper will be served and a silent auction will give guests a chance to win an array of attractive prizes.

The goal of Literacy Volunteers is to create a community where 100% literacy is the norm, and all adults have the literacy skills to get good jobs and help their children succeed in school. Literacy Volunteers recruits, trains, and supports volunteer tutors who provide free Reading and English conversation classes throughout Greater New Haven, Meriden, Wallingford and the Valley.

This event has been the organization's major special event for the past 15 years. Proceeds help fund free literacy classes for adults in Greater New Haven, Meriden/Wallingford, and the Valley towns.

The Tariq Farid Foundation, based in Wallingford, was founded in 2013 by Tariq Farid, the Founder and CEO of Edible Arrangements. The Foundation’s mission is to alleviate suffering by providing for the basic needs of food and healthcare, and to improve lives through the support of education and skill development opportunities that enable individuals to reach their full potential.

August 2016

 2016 Travelers Championship

Monday, August 01, 2016 through Sunday, August 07, 2016

Description: HARTFORD, Conn., July 23, 2015 -- The Travelers Championship today announced the 2016 event will be held August 1 - 7. The tournament, typically played in June, will be moved to August for one year to accommodate the Olympic year PGA TOUR schedule and updates to TPC River Highlands that will enhance the fan and player experiences. The 2017 Travelers Championship will return to its customary third week in June.

"Golf's return to the Olympics for the first time since 1904 will affect the majority of PGA TOUR events taking place from June through August," said Travelers Championship Tournament Director, Nathan Grube. "By working closely with the PGA TOUR, we identified the best timing for recruiting a strong player field and finishing the planned modifications to TPC River Highlands."

Next year's August date allows for the completion of a multi-million dollar course project at TPC River Highlands. Fan and competitive enhancements to the course will begin in the fall and are slated to be completed in 2016. Some of these updates include new areas for grandstands and fan viewing around the signature four finishing holes, modifications to greens, and renovations to bunkers throughout the course. Holding the tournament in August for one year will allow additional time to ensure the course will be ready to host world-class PGA TOUR competition.

"We're already looking forward to another great tournament that will generate significant funds for charity in 2016," added Andy Bessette, Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer for Travelers. "With the 2016 PGA Championship in New Jersey the week before our event, we're expecting the 2016 Travelers Championship field to be as strong as ever."

Location Info: Cromwell, CT.
