Energy Deregulation and Opportunities for the Consumer

Thursday, January 19, 2017 at 6:30 PM
At Meriden Public Library

Description: Confused about energy choices? Joe Paul and Ellis Ratner can help you with their seminar titled "Energy Deregulation and Opportunities for the Consumer".

The energy industry has been deregulated, much like the telecommunications industry many years before.  Prior to deregulation one company in any given market was in charge of transmitting and distributing energy.  It enjoyed a monopoly.  Following deregulation, energy monopolies were broken up and consumers were given the opportunity to select the energy supplier of their choice; but the ability to choose required consumers to make choices which were previously made for them.  They include choice of energy supplier.  There are several categories including solar energy, environmentally friendly or "green energy", fossil fuel and others.  There are also contractual matters that have emerged from deregulation which consumers should now consider.

This seminar will identify categories of energy suppliers including their advantages and disadvantages and alert consumers as to potential problem areas, such as early termination or switching energy suppliers. Information about other credible and objective sources of information will be available.

Joe Paul retired as Senior Vice President of a Multi - Center Bank, but has continued to actively pursue public service.  He is on the Board of Directors of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Societies and was their "2006 Man of the Year".  He also developed an interest in energy deregulation as a public service matter in the course of his candidacy for Mayor of Stratford.  He ran as an independent candidate with a pro - consumer orientation.  Energy deregulation was an area he thought needed attention.

As Program Director, Bureau of Consumer Protection, Federal Trade Commission, Ellis Ratner’s background is especially relevant to energy deregulation and consumer issues which it poses.

 2017 Travelers Championship

Monday, June 19, 2017 through Monday, June 26, 2017

Description: The Travelers Championship will be held August 1 - 7. The tournament, typically played in June, will be moved to August for one year to accommodate the Olympic year PGA TOUR schedule and updates to TPC River Highlands that will enhance the fan and player experiences. The 2017 Travelers Championship will return to its customary third week in June.

"Golf's return to the Olympics for the first time since 1904 will affect the majority of PGA TOUR events taking place from June through August," said Travelers Championship Tournament Director, Nathan Grube. "By working closely with the PGA TOUR, we identified the best timing for recruiting a strong player field and finishing the planned modifications to TPC River Highlands."

The August date allows for the completion of a multi-million dollar course project at TPC River Highlands. Fan and competitive enhancements to the course will begin in the fall and are slated to be completed in 2016. Some of these updates include new areas for grandstands and fan viewing around the signature four finishing holes, modifications to greens, and renovations to bunkers throughout the course. Holding the tournament in August for one year will allow additional time to ensure the course will be ready to host world-class PGA TOUR competition.

"We're already looking forward to another great tournament that will generate significant funds for charity in 2016," added Andy Bessette, Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer for Travelers. "With the 2016 PGA Championship in New Jersey the week before our event, we're expecting the 2016 Travelers Championship field to be as strong as ever."
