Embedded Support to Seamless Counseling to Graduation

Friday, September 29, 2017 at 9:00 AM–3:00 PM
At Albertus Magnus College

Description: Two of CHERE’s past conferences focused on key retention strategies for underrepresented, first generation and otherwise challenged students. On April 13, over 100 educators from over 40 colleges gathered to explore 'embedded support,' how to build extra support into credit-bearing courses. In 2015, we explored 'seamless counseling,' a proven approach to support challenged students graduating from high school, surviving 'summer melt' and continuing through college. Both strategies have proven effective, but there’s a lot more we have to do.

We will use these strategies as the backdrop for CHERE’s sixteenth conference, featuring a diverse group of higher education, K-12 and community-based representatives to look at new ways to design and test effective retention strategies.

To deepen understanding of these strategies, CHERE will feature a keynote address and workshop by Professor Peter Arthur, University of British Columbia at Okanagan, entitled: 'Meta Cognition, Grit and Growth Mindset: Keys to Retention'. Professor Arthur’s research indicates a positive relationship between these factors and academic success. These traits can all be taught and enhanced through experi-ence, starting in high school, and can foster successful lifelong learning. Professor Arthur will discuss his evidence-based strategies and share his research, showing how high schools and colleges can embed them in their learning environments seamlessly. Participants will then be able to evaluate multiple ways these strategies can be integrated into teaching.

- High school faculty and staff will learn how to instill meta cognition, grit and growth mindset into their future college students to help put them on a path to higher education success as key to "seamless counseling and support."
- Higher education faculty and staff will learn new ways to teach retention habits to their students -- instilling a "growth mindset" -- and evaluate the results.
- Community-based representatives who help challenged students access and succeed in higher education will learn how to complement what both high school and college staff are doing to assure that the students they continue to support make steady progress.
