At Meriden Public Library

Description: Meriden Public Library will host the program "An Education in the grotesque: the gargoyles of Yale University" presented by Mathew Duman. Mr. Duman will highlight a selection of gargoyles and grotesques found on the buildings of Yale University’s campus in New Haven, CT. Using photographs from his book "An Education in the Grotesque: The Gargoyles of Yale University", he explores the artistic, historic, architectural and even humorous significance of these decorative sculptures and their role in communicating the identity of Yale University as a place of learning and enlightenment.

Mathew Duman is a photographer and graphic designer who grew up in Bethany, Connecticut. While studying abroad, he developed a fascination with the grotesque sculptures of the cathedrals of Britain. In addition to England, Matt has made photographic trips to Italy, Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. Matt currently works at the Knights of Columbus in New Haven. He began exploring the variety of sculpture found on the buildings of Yale University a few years ago and as a personal project, has researched and documented these "new world" grotesques which are closer, but no less bewitching than their European counterparts.

Women Breaking Loose: a Century Ago

Saturday, March 28, 2015 at 2:00 PM
At Meriden Public Library

Description: You are invited to the program "Women Breaking Loose: A Century Ago" performed by Michèle LaRue. Ms. LaRue will explore the dilemmas women still face today of who comes first: my family or me? and where do I belong: at home or at work with Kate Chopin’s "A Pair of Silk Stockings" and Edna Ferber’s "Representing T. A. Buck."

Michèle LaRue is a transplanted Midwesterner: raised in Illinois and Iowa, she makes her home in New Jersey - just across the Hudson from Broadway, NYC. Upon graduating with a degree in Acting from the University of Kansas, she followed her late, then-soon-to-be-husband, Warren Kliewer, to Princeton. Her earliest East Coast roles included Julia in The Philanderer, at the University’s Theatre Intime; Viola in Twelfth Night, at Bucks County Playhouse; and one-fourth of a touring musical revue - Jerz - in which she shared the spotlight with a hyperkinetic young comedian named Joe Lane . . . later called "Nathan."

In addition to "making the rounds" in New York City, Michèle freelanced in graphic design and/or promotional writing for Off-Off-Broadway’s Amas Repertory, Joseph Jefferson, Harold Clurman, and South Street theatre companies; began writing for Back Stage: The Performer’s Weekly, and managing the studio of famed scenic designer Eldon Elder. Her subsequent offstage theatre jobs included marketing research and editorial work for the prestigious Theatre Projects [design] Consultants, writer editor for Theatre Crafts magazine, senior editor at Back Stage, and editor of ten theatre-related books. Onstage, Michèle collaborated with her husband on her first solo performance - The Yellow Wallpaper - and other projects. It was through working with Kliewer, and later with his East Lynne Company, that she fell in love with American literature of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Location Info: 105 Miller St., Meriden
