 New England Trade Adjustment Assistance Center Informational Webinar

Description: New England Trade Adjustment Assistance Center, Inc. (NETAAC) is a government funded non-profit organization that offers cost-shared assistance for import-impacted manufacturers through a grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce. NETAAC was formed to aid manufacturing companies in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont that have been negatively impacted by import trade. Qualifying businesses receive financial assistance to co-fund business-reviving initiatives that can address marketing, branding, strategy planning, e-commerce, lean manufacturing, ISO registration, and more. NETAAC’s goal is to help New England manufacturers increase profitability and retain employees while competing with imported products. In 2011, manufacturers working with NETAAC received over $5.1 million in approved assistance, an average of $125,000 per firm. There is no cost to apply to the program to determine eligibility and NETAAC handles all associated paperwork. All information regarding manufacturers in the program is held in strict confidence by NETAAC. This free informational webinar will provide insight into NETAAC, which could ultimately give your business an advantage in the globalizing marketplace.

 Chamber Young Business Leaders Committee Meeting

Description: As one of the newest committees affiliated with the Chamber, members of the Young Business Leaders come together to engage in community life and expand professional and social opportunities. This group is geared toward professionals between the ages of 21 and 39 however the young at heart are always welcome. All committee chairs and officers must be between the ages of 21-39. We welcome new members to serve as ambassadors for the Central Connecticut area.

YBL meetings are held twice per month, including a morning business meeting held at the Midstate Chamber of Commerce and an evening social meeting held at various restaurants throughout the local area. Each meeting poses the opportunity to meet new people and develop projects that enrich our community.

 26th Annual Walk/Run for Warmth Benefits NOGM Fuel Assistance

Description: New Opportunities of Greater Meriden (NOGM) is hosting its 26th Annual Walk/Run for Warmth event which raises funds to provide emergency fuel assistance for the Greater Meriden area residents. The Fuel Assistance Program is designed to assist low and middle income working families, needy elderly, the disabled and others in the midst of a financial crisis, such as a job loss or a medical emergency, who may not qualify for Federal or State heating assistance. These dollars are especially needed after the turn off moratorium expires in April.

Every year NOGM hosts the Walk/Run for Warmth to give the community an opportunity to get involved through sponsoring, volunteering, walking or donating to the event. We received USAFT sanctioning.. The event will be held on March 28th at First Congregational Church in Meriden located at 62 Colony St. from 10:00am to 2:00pm.

 Women Breaking Loose: a Century Ago

Description: You are invited to the program "Women Breaking Loose: A Century Ago" performed by Michèle LaRue. Ms. LaRue will explore the dilemmas women still face today of who comes first: my family or me? and where do I belong: at home or at work with Kate Chopin’s "A Pair of Silk Stockings" and Edna Ferber’s "Representing T. A. Buck."

Michèle LaRue is a transplanted Midwesterner: raised in Illinois and Iowa, she makes her home in New Jersey - just across the Hudson from Broadway, NYC. Upon graduating with a degree in Acting from the University of Kansas, she followed her late, then-soon-to-be-husband, Warren Kliewer, to Princeton. Her earliest East Coast roles included Julia in The Philanderer, at the University’s Theatre Intime; Viola in Twelfth Night, at Bucks County Playhouse; and one-fourth of a touring musical revue - Jerz - in which she shared the spotlight with a hyperkinetic young comedian named Joe Lane . . . later called "Nathan."

In addition to "making the rounds" in New York City, Michèle freelanced in graphic design and/or promotional writing for Off-Off-Broadway’s Amas Repertory, Joseph Jefferson, Harold Clurman, and South Street theatre companies; began writing for Back Stage: The Performer’s Weekly, and managing the studio of famed scenic designer Eldon Elder. Her subsequent offstage theatre jobs included marketing research and editorial work for the prestigious Theatre Projects [design] Consultants, writer editor for Theatre Crafts magazine, senior editor at Back Stage, and editor of ten theatre-related books. Onstage, Michèle collaborated with her husband on her first solo performance - The Yellow Wallpaper - and other projects. It was through working with Kliewer, and later with his East Lynne Company, that she fell in love with American literature of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

 Financial Reality Fair

At Central CT State University

Description: The Financial Reality Fair is a hands-on experience in which students, after identifying their career choice and starting salaries, are provided a budget sheet requiring htem to live within their mntly salary while paying for basics such as housing, utilities, transportation, clothing, and food. And some not-so-basics like entertainment and travel. Over 700 hundred students from 23 different high schools are scheduled to attend.

 Chamber Business Workshop: Referral Strategies

Description: Bruce Anesi, CFP, Canoga Wealth Management, will present this workshop on Referral Strageties. Every business owner wants a steady, reliable source of new and repeat customers and clients. In this companion program to our Networking Strategies Program, we will discuss how to convert your business networking contacts into referral partners. We will also discuss when, how and what to say when asking for referrals so that the referral source will not feel pressured or uncomfortable about being asked for referrals. Lastly, we will present a method to gracefully exit a referral request with someone who is unwilling to make referrals, without damaging the existing relationship.
