 Intro to Digital Photography with Ben Sordo

Monday, September 18, 2017 through Monday, October 30, 2017 at 6:30 PM–8:00 PM
At Meriden Public Library

Description: Photography simply stated is a way of communicating. It is a way of documenting, creating, and expressing. The key to a successful photograph is making a number of simple decisions. Photographer Ben Sordo will teach a series of six weekly classes on digital photography. In these classes, you will learn how cameras work, exposure, shutter speeds, aperture, focus, depth of field, light, types of lenses, composition, and tripod use. You will need to bring a working digital camera with manual controls or a DSLR (digital single lens reflex) camera.

 Opening Night: Bridgeport Sound Tigers

Description: The Sound Tigers will begin the home portion of their 17th season with a backpack giveaway to the first 3,000 kids (14 years of age or younger) courtesy of All Electric Construction and Communication. Added family fun will be provided in the Kids Zone on the outdoor plaza, presented by Big Y, which returns after a successful Opening Night in 2016. In addition, all students who participate in the CHET summer reading program will receive a FREE tiket to the game.

 Amazon Job Fair

Description: Record-Journal staff The Workforce Alliance is hosting several job fairs in Hamden, New Haven and Meriden in the next two weeks to fill seasonal part-time positions at the Amazon sorting center on Research Parkway in Wallingford. The first job fair will be Monday at the American Job Center, 37 Marne St., Hamden. Candidates are asked to pre-register for one of three time slots — 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m. or 12 p.m. — by calling Abby Gayle at 203-8593414 or Janice Albert at 203-8593417. Interviews are open to the first 20 registrants per time slot. Candidates should allow for two to three hours to complete application process. Candidates will take an on-line assessment and pre-employment drug screen. Those who pass will receive an offer of employment contingent upon the outcome of the drug screen and background check. Candidates will also need to provide required documentation for I-9 form. Hourly pay is $12.50. Another job fair will be at the Meriden American Job Center, 87 W. Main St., on Oct. 23 and also includes an online assessment and pre-employment drug screen. Those who pass both will be submitted to a criminal background check. Time slots for the Meriden fair are at 9:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. To register for first and second choices, email vgelpke@workforcealliance.biz or wlary@workforcealliance.biz to reserve a spot. Another fair will be on Oct. 25 at the New Haven American Job Center, 560 Ella T. Grasso Blvd. The time slots and reservation contact information are the same as the Meriden fair. Candidates should register first with www.CTHires.com. Click on “Find a Job” then the “Job Number Search” tab. The job order number is #107290. Amazon announced this week it will be hiring 120,000 people for the holiday season to work in fulfillment centers in 33 states. This adds to its 125,000 existing full-time employees. Locally, it hopes to hire 1,600 people for the Wallingford center, said a spokeswoman for Workforce Alliance. Amazon is looking for part-time seasonal fulfillment associates for four-hour shifts starting at 9 a.m., 2:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. Candidates are expected to use radio-frequency scanners and pick orders on all levels of a multi-level mezzanine, pack and ship orders, trouble-shoot resolutions. Minimum age is 18 years old with a high school diploma or equivalent. Applicants must be willing to work all shifts including weekends, able to work overtime as needed, lift up to 49 pounds, stand/ walk up to 10 hours, and be willing and able to work on powered equipment, forklift or cherry picker.

Meriden City Council / Mayoral Candidate Debate / Forum

Description: This event is sponsored by the Midstate Chamber of Commerce, Meriden Children First Initiative and the Record Journal Publishing Company. The sponsors will have a series of pre-prepared questions for the candidates.

Meriden Mayoral and City Council Candidates have been invited to participate in the program.

Candidates running for Meriden Mayor will be participating from 6:35 to 7:05 pm.

The Meriden City Council program will be from approximately 7:10 to 8:30 p.m.

Richard Hanley, Associate Professor of Journalism and Director of the Graduate Program in Journalism at Quinnipiac University, will be returning as moderator.

This event is FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. ALL are welcomed to attend.
